I am definitely on a culture kick. Last week we looked at the artwork
of James Todd. This week whilst on a day trip to Durham I came across.

the chess connection. I do not know why there is a lone Back King on g6 .

It could be random but these artistic types are into cryptic messages hidden
within their artwork. Maybe (says I clutching at a lone straw) there was a
coal mine coded and called G6 and this was the last pit to defiantly close...


I’ve never understood the concept of having a favourite artist, surely one
cannot like everything the painter paints. You can have favourite paintings
but a favourite artist? Have you met them, are they related like a favourite aunt?

But I have joined the throng and now have my very own favourite artist.

James Todd who did the cover of Chess Life December 1998. If you google
‘James Todd’ you will come across some amazing chess themed paintings.
And speaking of covers of Chess Magazines, here is CHESS February 1978. ...


Picked up a pile of these for 10p each.

Inside one of them was a piece revealing how the name ‘Osborne’ came about.
Seemingly William the Conqueror gave the name to one of his Knights after he
beat the Conqueror at a game of Chess. (though back then they spelt it ‘Chesse’.)
